Creativity takes courage

Creativity takes COURAGE. It is terrifying to put all you are into a work, and let the world see it. That is why art makes an impact; really good art lingers long after you have seen or heard it because the artist has had the courage to express something real. May all of us who call ourselves artists have that same courage. This view from the Berthe Morisot exhibition at the Barnes Foundation.

“All of life’s a stage, and we are merely players.” —Shakespeare. Decide who you want to be today, and be her. This helped me today while giving a talk to students at Rowan College about art, curating and structuring your life as a creative. It was my first time giving a full length lecture to students and I was a little nervous! What helped was actually thinking about the things I really wanted these students to know. I tried to put myself in their shoes as soon to graduate artists, and impart every useful tip I could about the artist life. Although I certainly don’t know it all and learn more every day, I’m hopeful what I did have to say was helpful to someone. One point in the talk was about loving your work. You really gotta love each piece. Put your heart and soul into it, and truly believe it’s something you’re proud of. When you do, other people will recognize the value you put on your own work and respond to it. A big thanks to Michelle Haberll who organized this talk and is a fabulous teacher and artist in her own right! “Being” goals rather than “having” goals

Snapped this photo on my run on Thanksgiving morning! I love where I live because of it’s close proximity to both nature and the city. I feel so lucky to get a taste of both.

As we only have one more month left in the year, I’ve been thinking about the goals I set last year and how it worked out for me. Many of the lofty goals I set for myself I did not accomplish. But then, many great things happened that I had no way of predicting! The goals that didn’t work for me this year included such things as: show at such and such gallery, sell my work for x amount, be written about in this magazine, win this contest, etc. What I’ve noticed is that these kinds of goals are counterproductive because they can make you feel helpless if you don’t achieve them–and much of achieving them depends on things or people outside of your control. Also, these are HAVING goals, not BEING goals. Really, we are happy when we are BEING a person we are proud of and excited to be, rather than HAVING a certain accomplishment or milestone. So this year’s goals will be all about BEING. Being the kind of artist who works for several hours a day in her studio, making the best work she can. Visiting galleries and museums. Thoughtfully curating exhibitions. A work ethic that is not dependent on the outcome, but on who I think of myself to be. These are the kinds of goals, I believe, that are more worthwhile long term, and will produce integrity in an art practice. What do you think, what kinds of goals do you have for the upcoming New Year?

Do not fear the empty spaces, they are spaces where we can design something beautiful. Do not fear unfilled spaces, time or future… it is the canvas where we can design goodness.

A moment of stolen reflection during last summer’s trip to France. The French value beauty in everything they do and build; it is an integral part of their culture and history, which makes visiting the country a dream and such an inspiration for an artist. I love the preserved old world architecture, the attention to detail and artistry everywhere I looked. Where are your favorite spots to travel to for inspiration?

I’ve been feeling quite bookish lately, perhaps it’s all the rainy weather.  What is your favorite fiction novel?  I’d have to say mine is The Time Machine by H.G. Wells.  I read it in grad school and could not put it down.  The 2002 film is also quite enjoyable, although different than the book.  Tell me your favorites, I need a new book to read/listen to while painting!

Lord Byron said, “There is pleasure in the pathless woods, there is music in the shore, a society which none intrudes, by the deep sea, and music in its roar; I love not man the less, but nature, more.”  The dark reflecting pool is from a castle in France, Chateau Chenonceau which I had the good fortune of visiting this summer.  Unlike Byron, I do not wish to be without friends or family for very long, but  I do enjoy the solitude of a walk in nature and the poetry of its peace.  Where is your favorite place to enjoy the enchantment of nature?

The definition of romance: to make special.  The romantic life, then, is making each moment, person, and experience special, everything you do with love and intention, to create a life filled with romance.  From France at the dreamiest Chateau ever, I felt like I was in a Bronte novel!  The French certainly know a thing or two about living romantically.  Where is your favorite place you have stayed?  This was certainly it for me!

Jessica in Pink Room

Treasure each moment in the stream of time, for once you pass this way, the water is always different, always moving ,always new, even if you dip your hand in the same place.  The only constant is change.  Find peace in the moving rhythm of time by soaking in each moment’s beauty and feeling its wonder or pain fully.  Then your life will be really full, extraordinary in its depth of experience, even if not what the world may deep accomplished.  There is an integrity and quiet happiness when you savor each moment, that you can take with you whenever you go.  Doing small things with great attention.  Here, a picture from the Loire Valley, France in a pink-paneled room I loved staying in earlier this month.  And today in the USA, watching the lightning for a moment out my window before painting.  What small things give you great joy in life?
