Rodin is my favorite sculptor.  Ever since I saw his work at his home museum in Paris, I was in love with his work.  In Philadelphia, we have a small but gorgeous museum of his work, that I love!  In a collaboration with Ms. Malena’s Vintage Boutique and Kerasan Lamar Photography, who photographed all the images with me in them, we decided on this location to tell the story of the amazingly detailed turn of the century jacket and robe.  I loved the combination of these pieces and the backdrop of the beautiful and elegant sculptures and architecture.  To see more of Malena’s Vintage Boutique, check it out here!  I am such a fan of this shop, and have many of my dresses in my personal collection from her.  I highly recommend! And now, to feel this elegant every day…

Coco Chanel study

Chanel Modes Study, oil on panel, 5″ x 7″, by Jessica Libor 2018

This 5″ x 7″ oil on panel study was made in preparation for a larger painting with the same subject matter.  Did you know that Coco Chanel was a milliner (hat maker) before she began making dresses?  She had her own shop, called “Chanel Modes.”

Message if interested in this piece!  Done while studying at the Grand Central Atelier.

If all the world’s a stage, who do you play today?  In this outfit I felt transported to the 1940s, playing the part of a femme fatale in a mysterious plot.  The best fashion transports and transforms the wearer into a different state of mind. Delighted to collaborate with Top Vintage Boutique on this project with photographs by Jake Foden at the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

Jessica in Pink Room

Treasure each moment in the stream of time, for once you pass this way, the water is always different, always moving ,always new, even if you dip your hand in the same place.  The only constant is change.  Find peace in the moving rhythm of time by soaking in each moment’s beauty and feeling its wonder or pain fully.  Then your life will be really full, extraordinary in its depth of experience, even if not what the world may deep accomplished.  There is an integrity and quiet happiness when you savor each moment, that you can take with you whenever you go.  Doing small things with great attention.  Here, a picture from the Loire Valley, France in a pink-paneled room I loved staying in earlier this month.  And today in the USA, watching the lightning for a moment out my window before painting.  What small things give you great joy in life?

Flame, oil on panel (1 of 1)

My new piece! “Flame”, oil on panel, 20″x24″, Jessica Libor 2015

Happy New Year!  I hope you had a great time celebrating 2016.  I had a wonderful evening, and also finished a new piece, “Flame,” in keeping with the winter season.  The new year is a time I always reflect on the past 12 months and think about the year to come.  Almost everyone I know sets goals for the new year: finish a creative project, try something new, travel more, exercise, make more art, etc.  But how can we actually achieve those goals? Check out these tips that will guarantee a better success rate for hitting those new year’s resolutions!

  1.  Spend time with people you want to be like.  Studies have shown that the people you surround yourself with influence you more than anything.  So make sure that the friends, teachers, and people you choose to hang out with are positive influences with lifestyles and choices you would want for your own life.  Bonus if they also are great at what they do, because their energy will pull you upwards.
  2. Take time to learn.  Even though you may think you know everything about your field, chances are there is always more to learn.  Also, don’t limit yourself to just learning more about your niche field (such as art).  Sometimes the greatest inspiration will strike you when you are totally engaged in something OTHER than your field.  So if  you’re an artist, maybe try hiking, cooking, learning a new language, or writing.  Those crossover skills can give you greater depth and inspiration into your art.
  3. Take care of yourself.  This means eating healthy, exercise, getting the rest your body needs, and the social support that humans need.
  4. Move fast.  When you have a good idea, run with it.  For me, this means keeping a small sketchpad with me in my purse, and when an idea strikes me (most often while driving, waiting in line somewhere, or generally not thinking about it) I can pull out the sketchpad and capture the moment before it gets lost in the day’s thoughts.  I like the idea of “Artist is the choreographer of Time,” from Lera Auerbach in her book Excess of Being.
  5. Finish your projects.  This is a tough one for me as an artist because it’s hard to know when a project is finished.  In fact, I don’t know of one painting I’ve done where I can be like, “Yes, this is done and there’s not one more thing to do to it!” I could work on one piece of art literally FOREVER.  At some point, I just have to stop.  However, in recent times I’ve pushed myself past the point where I normally stop, and surprise myself with how detailed and finished the paintings become.  So maybe for me this is more about pushing your projects further, and going that extra mile.  You may surprise yourself what you can do!

I hope these tips help you as we begin 2016!  Don’t forget to subscribe to never miss a post.  Stay creative,

Jessica

Last weekend, I had a private art show at my studio!  I was inspired by the old Parisian “Salons” that existed in Victorian times, that gathered together painters, musicians, writers, and businesspeople to all enjoy an evening of meeting new people and conversing about the arts culture.  It was so much fun to invite people into my world to see where I create my paintings.  I spent a lot of time getting ready for the event, cooking homemade stuffed shells, salads, and for dessert, miniature cupcakes and angel food cake with whipped cream and strawberries, with bubbly punch and assorted wines.  I set up the space to showcase my sketches and paintings, including one work-in-progress that is on my easel.  Candlelight served as the perfect lighting accent to bring the work into focus with a soft glow.  Several happy collectors went home with new works of art that evening, and everyone had a lovely relaxed evening.  One of the highlights of the evening was the electric violin live performance by Brian Fitzy, who has played with the Trans-Siberian Orchestra.
