"Holding Court", oil, gold, and butterfly wings on panel, 10"x10", Jessica Libor 2014

“Holding Court”, oil, gold, and butterfly wings on panel, 10″x10″, Jessica Libor 2014

I made a new piece this month for the 2014 Benefit Exhibition at Bridgette Mayer Gallery.  It’s called “Holding Court” and is 10″x10″ oil, gold, and butterfly wings on panel.

For this image I was inspired by the memory of a drawing by Fragonard that  I saw once but could never again relocate, but the memory of how the figures were clustered, and the way the light played hide and seek on the scene, remained with me and inspired me to try and create it again my own way.  I kept thinking about Queen Titania from A Midsummer Night’s Dream as  I was painting it as well–and the butterfly wings were a last minute decision.  Every fairy needs her wings.
